What is Thread Lifting?

Silhoutte Soft® threads are made in the USA and are made of Poly-L Lactic Acid (PLLA). This material has been used for years in various biomedical products such as implants, orthopaedic screws and pins and absorbable suture material so its safety and effectiveness is proven.

Silhouette Soft® threads consist of threads of PLLA with bi-directional cones on them to create a lifting effect and stimulate new collagen formation.

How does Thread Lifting work?

Silhouette Soft® threads have a dual action. Firstly, they cause a discrete but immediate lifting effect due to skin tightening and lifting at the time of insertion.

They also stimulate new collagen formation under the skin which improves volume and shape in the face.

  • How many treatments of Silhouette Soft® will I need?

Silhouette Soft® thread lifting is a once of treatment. The threads will naturally be broken down in the skin over 18 months – 2 years into lactic acid and other natural products. By this time, the collagen in your skin will have been regenerated, improving skin quality and facial volume.

If you wish to have your thread lifting procedure repeated, you can do so at any time.

  • What does treatment involve?

The procedure takes approximately 40-60 minutes, including time to administer local anaesthetic, and is performed by Dr McDonnell who has been extensively trained in Silhouette Soft® use.

Photographs are taken prior to the procedure and Dr McDonnell will consent you for the procedure.

Your face will be cleaned and draped to create a sterile area.

The area to be lifted will be measured and marked to ensure accurate placement of the threads, then local anaesthetic is injected at the planned entry and exit points of the threads.

Once these areas are numb, the threads are placed under the skin using a needle.

The skin is then gently compressed to achieve the desired lifting effect and the ends of the thread are cut.

  • How many Silhouette Soft® threads will I need?

This is very variable and depends on the amount of skin laxity and the amount of lift that is needed.

For your face, you will require at least 2 threads per side for those who need only a mild lifting effect but for those who need moderate lifting, 3-4 threads each side will be needed.

  • Are there any side effects to Silhouette Soft® thread lifting?

As with any procedure involving injection of the skin and insertion of an implant, you may experience some side effects.

Local anaesthetic is injected at the planned entry and exit points of the threads; this causes mild temporary pain. During the threading procedure you may experience some mild discomfort as the threads are guided under the skin; the majority of clients tolerate this well.

Other side effects include bruising, swelling, tingling, redness and numbness. These are temporary and settle over the course of a few days.

Rare side effects include infection and nodule formation under the skin. Temporary dimpling and irregularity of the skin is to be expected for a few days after the procedure and settles within a few days.

  • What kind of results can be expected from Silhouette Soft® thread lifting?

Silhouette Soft® thread lifting is suitable for people with mild to moderate skin laxity and a mild lifting effect of approximately 1-2cm can be achieved. This lifting effect is immediate.

Over time, through collagen stimulation, facial volume and skin quality improves.

  • Who is Thread Lifting not suitable for?

Silhouette Soft® is not suitable for people with severe skin laxity, thick heavy (hypertrophied) skin or people who are very thin who may have very little fat or supporting tissue under their skin.

It is also not suitable for anyone who has any facial surgery as this alters the anatomy of the face and increases the risk of complications. Silhouette Soft® is also not suitable for people with compromised immune systems such as autoimmune disease, active skin infection or inflammatory skin conditions.

Your suitability for treatment can be discussed during a consult with Dr McDonnell.
